GEOmon data centre - Data Use Policy

GEOmon is a project funded by the European Commission with a duration of 4 years, from February 2007-February 2011. Its mission is to build an integrated pan-European atmospheric observing system of greenhouse gases, reactive gases, aerosols, and stratospheric ozone. The GEOmon data centre provides access to a wide variety of data related to atmospheric composition; part of the data has been acquired with GEOmon funding. Data contained in the GEOmon data centre are generally freely available for non-commercial use.

To maintain fairness to the individuals who have contributed, use of these data requires notification and acknowledgement to the data originators/providers, potentially including an offer of co-authorship.

Use of these data implies an agreement to reciprocate. Institutes making similar measurements are strongly encouraged to make their own data available to the scientific community in a complete and easily accessible form. Modellers are encouraged to make available to the community, upon request, their own tools used in the interpretation of the GEOmon data.

The GEOmon data centre contains and provides access to two types of data sets:

  • Type I data are funded by GEOmon. Every data set created within GEOmon is owned by the GEOmon partner/s who created this data set.
  • Type II data are funded by other sources and owned by different organisations or data providers, and may be partly hosted at other data bases. Rapid delivery (RD) data may also be considered Type II data. Type II data are provided with the permission of each organisation or data provider contributing to the data archive. Each data set of type II may have its own data policy that will supersede the GEOmon data policy.

Users accessing data (type I and II) for use from the GEOmon data centre are expected to:

  • Contact the different organisations or data providers responsible for the measurement to verify proper interpretation of the data in the context of the intended use,
  • Grant data providers the opportunity to review the use of the data and conclusions drawn from it,
  • Invite the data provider(s) at an early stage to be co-author on any papers written if their data are essential to the work or an important result or conclusion has been obtained using their data,
  • Acknowledge GEOmon using the following citation: We acknowledge the support of the European Commission through the GEOmon (Global Earth Observation and Monitoring) Integrated Project under the 6th Framework Program (contract number FP6-2005-Global-4-036677).

In addition, the GEOmon site provides links to external data bases. If the user follows such a link to another database, then the data policy for this database will apply.
