GEOmon Gender Web site

Women remain underrepresented in science, especially in leading positions. The GEOmon Gender Committee actively promotes the role of women at all levels in the project.

Women remain a minority among researchers in the EU. The proportion of woman has slightly increased from 27% to 29% from 1999 to 2003. While this indicates a continued positive trend overall, women remain underrepresented in science, especially in leading positions.

The figure to the right shows the development of the proportion of men and woman in the natural sciences and engineering at different stages of the scientific career (in 1999 and 2003). It illustrates the way in which the gender gap changes throughout the stages of an academic career, beginning with studying at the basic level of higher education.
