Global Earth Observation and Monitoring
of the Atmosphere

GEOmon is a first step to build a future integrated pan-European Atmospheric Observing System dealing with systematic observations of long-lived greenhouse gases, reactive gases, aerosols, and stratospheric ozone.

The goal of the GEOmon project is to sustain and analyze European ground-based observations of atmospheric composition, complementary with satellite measurements, in order to quantify and understand the ongoing changes.

GEOmon is an Integrated project within the 6th FRAMEWORK PROGRAMME of the European Union with a duration of four years. It is coordinated by Philippe CIAIS (Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique CEA, France) and includes 38 participating institutes.

The main objectives are to
  • unify and harmonize the main Europeans networks of surface and aircraft-based measurements
  • support data gathering at existing networks
  • coordinate access to data and data-products at a common data centre
  • integrate surface measurements with those of satellites
  • develop new methodologies to use these data for satellite validation
  • enable new ground-based measurements complementary to satellites
  • reduce biases and random errors in satellite observations
