Global Earth Observation and Monitoring
of the Atmosphere

Key Questions
  • What are the reasons for trends of reactive gases in the troposphere? Are trend due to

    • changing photochemistry?

    • changing transport processes?

    • reduction of precursors?

Trends of reactive gases in the troposphere have been observed in the recent past. These trends deviate substantially at different European regions and altitude levels. The figures on the right shows an example for diverging ozone trends during the last 15 years. The reason for this behaviour has not yet been fully understood.
Example of contrary development of ozone time series for (black) an elevated site in Central Europe and (red) an elevated site in Eastern Europe. Courtesy of O. Tarasova. Presented at EGU General Assembly 2008

Two time series for (black) an elevated site in Central Europe (Jungfraujoch, 46.5°N, 7.9°E, 3580 m asl) and (red) an elevated site in Eastern Europe (Kislovodsk High Mountain Station, 43.7°N, 42.7°E, 2070 m asl) are shown. While at the beginning of the 1990th both sites recorded similar ozone mixing ratios, by 2006 mixing ratios significantly increased at Jungfraujoch and decreased at Kislovodsk. It is one aim of GEOmon to foster the understanding of trends in reactive gases over the whole European continent.

Objectives
  • Link of existing ground-based remote sensing networks and passenger aircraft programs to satellite measurements

  • Integrated chemical composition measurements by implementing CARIBIC

  • Long-term consistent, representative data sets for the European boundary-layer
Schematic of atmospheric volumes sampled by different measurement techniques.

Workpackages

  1. Network of surface reactive gases measurements
Quality assured, harmonized, and regionally representative data sets in the European boundary-layer using long-term surface observations.

  2. Airborne monitoring of the free troposphere
Provide quality assured and integrated chemical composition measurements of the global free troposphere, with focus on O3 and CO from CARIBIC

  3. Network of ground-based remote sensing measurements
for satellite validation (with activity 5) Link data from ground-based remote sensing networks and passenger aircraft programs to satellite measurements, in synergy with model studies
